In this tale by Béla Balázs, the love between two young people can only be realised after great struggle. The Fairy's magic sends the forces of nature to obstruct them, so that they cannot belong to one another until they have been cleansed of false external appearances that conceal their true value. Béla Bartók's music raises this morality tale to the level of philosophy, allowing us to discover the purest ideal of love after looking into our own pained selves.
