Dancer-choreographer Nacho Duato is one of the most outstanding figures of modern Spanish dance. A successful career led to his appointment in 1990 as director of the Compañía Nacional de Danza de España, the national dance ensemble. In 2010, he joined the Mikhailovsky Ballet as it artistic director.
Founded in 1833, Saint Petersburg's Mikhailovsky Theatre is one of Russia's oldest opera houses. Its corps de ballet simultaneously represents traditional Russian dance and ballet with an innovative approach.
Nacho Duato's choreographic world emerged in the course of his collaboration with the greatest artists. He studied at the Rambert School in London, with Maurice Béjart in Brussels, and at the Alvin Ailey Dance Theatre in New York. He was lead dancer at Stockholm's Cullbert Ballet, before joining the Nederlands Dans Theater, led by Jiří Kylian. Later he made productions for companies like the Australian Ballet, the Ballet Gulbenkian, the Paris Opera Ballet, and the Martha Graham Daance Company.
