One of the best known authors of French romanticism, he ignited an intellectual revolution in his own time; he declared war on classicism and gathered together under the banner of romanticism the leading French artists of the era. His novel Notre-Dame de Paris (generally known in English as The Hunchback of Notre Dame) appeared in 1831 and is one of the earliest creations of Romanticism. His hero is distorted from the outside, but within he is a noble soul. His name is of course Quasimodo, who will accept any amount of suffering for his love. “The essence of the work for me is actually more relevant today than ever, since in our busy world, feelings and human relationships are being forever pushed into the background. None of the four main characters of the story succeeds in finding love. Their unsuccessful attempts hold up a mirror to society in which stereotypes dominate our lives and the ideals of our era overturn our sense of judgement. In this work, through the emotional strand, a caricature can become beautiful; a high intellect is not sufficient for us to give an answer to all life’s questions, naivety does not guard us from pain, nor does beauty open up the doors of harmony”.
