11 February 2024, Sunday
5 pm - 6 pm
Atrium
Produced by Müpa Budapest

Dance house led by:

Gergő Sánta
Júlia Paput

Featuring:

Hungarian National Dance Ensemble Band

Get ready for the perfect lead-up to the evening’s entertainment: everyone participating in the dance house preceding the large-scale production Carnival Sunday will get to finally experience first-hand the blessings of folk dance and folk music. Even with top musicians churning out the exhilarating foot-stomping music, one cannot dance to it whilst seated in an auditorium. But now comes a one-time-only opportunity to sample the very best of folk culture together with the band and outstanding soloists of the Hungarian National Dance Ensemble.

Müpa Budapest’s ensemble of the season is the Hungarian National Dance Ensemble, and serving as a kind of ‘prelude’ to their third performance, one relating to the carnival season, will be a dance house aimed at spectators young and old alike. Just like every time the team led by Kossuth Prize-winning dancer/choreographer and Artist of the Nation Zoltán Zsuráfszky take the stage, stylistic diversity and geographical diversity will again be the trademark when the artists display their pedagogical abilities as they give anyone interested in attending a taste of dances from different regions. Teaching dances from the Southern Great Plain – which the audience will also get to see at the evening performance – and the merry customs of the region, such as the joke wedding and the mock funeral will be Hungarian National Dance Ensemble soloists Anna Sánta-Bíró and Harangozó Award-winner Gergő Sánta. While dance soloists Júlia Paput and Bence Zsombor Juhász, both named Young Masters of Folk Art, will be our guides on a trip to the Bodrogköz area through folk music and dance. The authentic musical environment and inimitable dance house atmosphere will be provided, naturally, courtesy of the Hungarian National Dance Ensemble Band. This dance house is highly recommended for everyone coming to see the Carnival Sunday programme, because the movement sequences being taught by the ensemble’s dancers are closely linked to the folk customs to be presented on stage later in the evening.
