The titular character of Marco Goecke’s production is Vaslav Nijinsky (1890–1950), the iconic genius of modern dance. The play evokes the most important moments in the life of the dancer and choreographer, both on and off the stage. Nijinsky was the solo dancer of Sergei Diaghilev’s legendary Ballets Russes for ten years. He enchanted audiences with virtuosic leaps and an androgynous charisma, and his bold choreographies caused scandals. In the last thirty years of his life, he suffered from severe mental health problems. Marco Goecke’s choreography was premiered with great success at the Stuttgart dance festival in 2016, and it has been touring the world ever since. It is brought to the Bartók Spring by Riga’s Latvian National Ballet, the only professional ballet company in Latvia, with a history spanning more than one hundred years. The company is distinguished by its high level of professionalism and an exceptionally broad repertoire that encompasses classical, neoclassical and contemporary works.
