It's impossible to overemphasize the importance of the issue: humanity is hell-bent on destroying its environment - and as a consequence, itself. It is only a matter of time. It is absurd that the idea has become a commonplace, a subject for the tabloid press, while we only have, in cosmic terms, a few seconds left on this tiny planet.
All the same, we will watch our very own demise from the comfort of our sofas, on TV, with the indifference of an outsider. Which of course may be just as well. It may be part of the ceaseless change of all things. The process of purification begins anew from time to time.
Górecki's music encourages the listener to ask essential questions about being. It does not allow us to rest, to grow lazy in the comfort of our day-to-day life. It both makes the universe sound and speaks in an utterly human voice. It elicits the real drama from the tension between the two voices, championing the truth and love of life, and speaking for the perennial responsibility of the artist in influencing how we shape our lives.
