Bartók: The Miraculous Mandarin:
Two revolutionaries on the same stage: Two giants of 20th-century music, Igor Stravinsky and Béla Bartók, will meet in this new production from the 40-year-old Ballet Company of Győr. Following the streamlined beauty of András Lukács's choreography of Stravinsky's works will be a production of The Miraculous Mandarin by the creator of narrative ballets László Velekei, who brings the familiar story closer to our own time. Classical and contemporary, beautiful and ugly, harmony and confusion, the ideal and chaos: in this two-part show, these extremes will not follow each other, but instead complement and explain each other.
It was a remarkable moment in Hungarian dance history in 1979 when the Ballet Company of Győr was formed: the team, which quickly went on to travel the world, this year bears the title of Müpa Budapest's Ensemble of the Season. Over the decades, Iván Markó and János Kiss developed an unmistakable image for the team, and their successors have to contend with this legacy. Since the summer of 2020, the company has been helmed by Seregi and Harangozó Award-winner László Velekei, with András Lukács, another winner of both recognitions, serving as artistic director. This Stravinsky/Bartók production commissioned by Müpa Budapest may well herald the dawn of a new era. Lukács first premièred his choreography Movements to Stravinsky, now being revived with the Ballet Company of Győr, with the Wiener Staatsballett in 2017, to great acclaim. This production reacts to a selection of the composer's works in powerful and concentrated images. Valekei has created a new choreography for Bartók's epochal masterpiece: this time, the story of The Miraculous Mandarin will play out in a bleak underground location. Fight a battle of life and death between wings that are familiar to us too will be those exiled from society and the Mandarin, a figure symbolic of Eastern thought.
