The work by Slovenian composer Andrej Misson is an arrangement for symphony orchestra of one of the best-known songs to come from legendary British band Deep Purple. In his Horn Concerto No. 1, Richard Strauss takes advantage of the possibilities and colours offered by the instrument to set highly varied moods against each other. The three movements are played without pause. Ferenc Liszt compiled his Hungarian Rhapsody from the verbunkos Gypsy music and folk-inspired art songs and “czardas” tunes that were popular in his era. These piano pieces have spawned more than one orchestral arrangement. A superb pianist, Russia's Modest Mussorgsky also composed his Pictures at an Exhibition for the keyboard instrument. He wrote the 1874 piece in memory of his painter friend Viktor Hartmann, taking inspiration from 14 of the artist's pictures at an exhibition of the artist's work. Representing the stroll from one painting to another, the melody of the Promenade recurs five times through the work and acts as a bridge linking the style and atmosphere of the images together by way of key signature, tempo and dynamics. The work is being performed in this concert as scored in 1922 by the Slovenian-born violinist and conductor Leo Funtek, who went on to live much of his life in Finland.
