Puccini

Madama Butterfly

Giacomo Puccini was not only a defining composer of his time, but also a great connoisseur of the human soul. His operas focus on the fates of women and girls standing on every possible rung of the social hierarchy. Puccini portrays their vulnerability and defencelessness with exceptional empathy. Based on true events, Madama Butterfly suffered a scandalously poor reception at its première in February 1904. The composer thoroughly revised the work, and the new version was rapturously received three months later in Brescia. Madama Butterfly became what Puccini had dreamt: one of the greatest and most successful operas of all time.
