Xaver Varnus Organ Concert: Music by Bach and Sonnets from Shakespeare
5 November 2023, Sunday
2 pm - 4:30 pm
one interval
Béla Bartók National Concert Hall

Featuring:

actor Piroska Molnár, László Szacsvay

The renowned organ virtuoso Xaver Varnus and two outstanding personalities from the Hungarian theatrical world, Piroska Molnár and László Szacsvay, are teaming up on stage to bring a pair of pivotal figures in the history of universal culture, William Shakespeare and Johann Sebastian Bach, together for a date.

Although Shakespeare died decades before Bach was born and we don't know whether Bach ever saw or read any of Shakespeare's works, the testimony of these two witnesses to their era who never met is what makes this evening so exciting: Xaver Varnus, a recipient of major Hungarian awards and recognitions, has been part of the history of Müpa Budapest's organ from the begining, as he was one of the four artists who played at the instrument's inaugural concert in 2006. Varnus's concert of works by Bach that packed Berlin Cathedral has so far been viewed by 15 million people on YouTube, making it officially now the most viewed organ film in the history of music, and his YouTube channel boasts a total of nearly 35 million views.
