Wagner: Tannhäuser - overture Berlioz: Romeo and Juliet, op. 17 – orchestral excerpts Prokofiev: Romeo and Juliet – excerpts from ballet suites No. 1 and No. 2 Sponsored by Ingeokom The World Orchestra for Peace was created in 1995 to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the United Nations. It was first led by Georg Solti, who died ten years ago on September 5th. The aim of the orchestra, in the words of the Hungarian conductor, was to express the power of music as the ambassador of peace. T...he orchestra is made up of the world’s best, with musicians, section principals and first violinists who play with the likes of the Berlin Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra and other world leading ensembles. Its members are drawn from forty five orchestras in twenty four countries and only come together to make music on special occasions. Georg Solti handpicked Valerij Gergijev as his successor and after Solti’s death, the forty four year old Russian took charge of the World Orchestra. As the artistic director of the St Petersburg Mariinsky Theatre (from 1919 to 1992, the Kirov Opera), he made a world wide reputation with his rediscovery of masterpieces of Soviet-Russian music. He is famous for his energetic and exceptionally suggestive performances and also as a music director is an extremely creative artist who is now regarded as one of the best conductors of Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Rimsky-Korsakov and Mussorgsky. The patron of the World Orchestra for Peace is Georg Solti’s widow, Lady Valerie Solti.
