Conductor: Stephen D’Agostino Wagner-Maazel: The Ring Without Words The notion of compressing the immense musical material of Wagner’s Ring Cycle into a single symphonic work was probably the initiative of the composer’s grandson, the famous director and festival director Wieland Wagner. He recognized that the essence of these operas could be expressed purely instrumentally without stage scenes or voices. Lorin Maazel has linked together the most important music drama episodes from the seven...teen hours of Ring music, to form a seventy five minute symphonic poem. The work contains exclusively Wagner’s music, the majority being music originally intended just for orchestra with the bare minimum of musical alterations. The orchestral music is astoundingly expressive and without voice and words, the leitmotifs themselves illuminate the connections and narrate the story.
