Wagner

Die Walküre

In June 2019, eleven years after first being performed in its entirety at Müpa Budapest, the Ring tetralogy is returning in a revival that preserves Hartmut Schörghofer's acclaimed directorial concept, but which has been updated in several respects, with new choreographies, stage action and projected films for the audience to enjoy. This will be the second occasion for the audience to see this new and yet still familiar Ring.

Die Walküre is the first evening in the tetralogy in which we confront the power and darkness of the myth, with fateful moments. Two siblings who commit a sin nevertheless feel that destiny has ordained for them to be together. A sword, whose eventual owner we can already identify, will belong to whomever is meant to pull it out of the trunk of the ash tree. Just as he himself will eventually belong - in the mythical struggle - to death. Even if a god is torn over this - for we will be made to see how in Wagner's hands, even a god can squirm in the grip of problems. Perhaps the most popular piece in the Ring cycle, Die Walküre is more than a music drama: it is also a true Romantic opera and a classic love triangle. And it includes such renowned passages as the Spring Song, the Ride of the Valkyries and the Magic Fire music.
As an exciting change, the role of Siegmund, after having been sung by Christopher Ventris in 2017 and Stuart Skelton in 2019, will this year be taken over by Zoltán Nyári, while the part of Sieglinde, previously sung by Anja Kampe in 2017 and Camilla Nylund in 2019, will now go to the versatile German soprano Simone Schneider. And there will also be old acquaintances, with Catherine Foster as Brünnhilde, Atala Schöck as Fricka and, of course, the conductor of the Budapest Wagner Days, Ádám Fischer, who will once again create the sweep and power of Die Walküre with incomparable intensity.

A music drama in three acts (Updated version of the renowned production, in German, with surtitles projected in Hungarian and German).
