Verdi

La traviata - opera in three acts

We know from Gergely Kesselyák's biography that he has conducted more than 60 operas and other works for the musical stage in numerous theatres since starting his career in 1993. It is also a well-known fact that he has served as a member of the jury of the Virtuosos television talent search programme for years. For his own part, he contributes to expanding the opportunities for talented young singers to perform in public by inviting them to join the casts of the operas he conducts. Another connection that this concert-format opera performance shares with the television show is Erika Miklósa: an enthusiastic member of the Virtuosos jury for many years, she will sing the title role.

Verdi set his opera to a libretto by Francesco Maria Piave based on the Alexandre Dumas novel The Lady of the Camellias and the stage play created from it. It received its première in 1853, at Venice's La Fenice theatre. The title (La traviata) refers to a woman who has lost her way. The story unfolds in Paris and revolves around Violetta, a courtesan moving in bourgeois circles who longs for sincere emotions. This good-hearted woman eventually dies of consumption. One of Verdi's most popular operas, La traviata does a wonderful job of depicting the feelings of the characters, the dramatic tension, as well as the milieu and atmosphere of the typical events that made up Parisian social life. So it's a sure thing that even without acting, sets and costumes, encountering this work will still be a great experience.
