In Victor Hugo’s hot-blooded and passionate early Romantic drama, sparks are constantly flying between the three main protagonists, an atmosphere which Verdi illustrates through musically conflicting styles. The confrontation of the customary vocal archetypes of the agonised, heroic tenor and the implacable baritone is evoked by Verdi in an uncharacteristically raw manner, primarily by bringing the wind instruments to the fore in the orchestration.
