Elgar

Enigma Variations, op. 36

László Kovács is one of the busiest conductors of Hungarian orchestras, known as a many-faceted and open-minded musician. At this concert in the Symphonic Discoveries series, which provides a regular opportunity for young soloists to display their skills, Kovács will conduct the orchestra he has led since February 2015 in a performance of three popular works ranging from the early to mature Romantic period. Mendelssohn’s suite accompanying Shakespeare’s comedy is rightly a permanent fixture of concert halls, not only thanks to its popular Wedding March, but also for the overture – written by the composer when he was only 17 years old – which brilliantly captures and summarises the main aspects of the play. Tchaikovsky’s virtuoso variations, which invoke the 18th century of the composer’s beloved Mozart, will feature the outstandingly talented Tomasz Daroch as soloist. Born in 1989 , the Polish cellist perfected his skills in Germany, and has also been taught in master classes by Miklós Perényi, among others. Among his appearances in international competitions, his second place in the 2014 Pablo Casals Cello Competition in Budapest stands out. The mystery of the concert’s closing orchestral work is reflected in its title: British composer Edward Elgar is thought to have “painted” musical portraits of his friends in this beautiful masterpiece, full of fascinating and delightful character.
