If He is good and benign, why does He allow this much suffering? The answer can only be that He himself suffers within us, just as we are pained when each of our cells suffers. What is more, the divine living in us is dual, and through the experience of the opposites of good and bad, we know truth and completeness: health in illness, mortality in immortality, light through shade. This is the sense of Lucifer’s name: the Light Bringer. So through understanding via knowledge, we reach a point in art where bad and good sublimate and the death of a child in a Schubert song or the demonic evil inherent in Liszt’s Mephisto waltz are able to evoke beauty.
