Ein Heldenleben, Op. 40

On 7 October 1943, the Hungarian Radio Symphony Orchestra gave its first public concert. This event conducted by Ernst von Dohnányi featured works by Tchaikovsky, Chopin and Liszt, including the latter's symphonic poem Les Préludes. In commemoration of that historic concert 80 years ago, Tamás Vásáry will conduct the same work, while János Kovács has chosen an exceptional piece by Mendelssohn. Riccardo Frizza will celebrate the anniversary with Richard Strauss's symphonic poem Ein Heldenleben.

According to Schumann, the cantata composed to the famous 42nd Psalm (‘As a deer yearns for running streams, so I yearn for you, my God') was not only Mendelssohn's most significant work of church music: it was also the most important of the entire era. The composer himself was proud of it too, saying, "I treasure it more than most of my other works.” The closing number of the concert - a symphonic poem by Richard Strauss chosen by Riccardo Frizza to honour the jubilee - offers an opportunity to marvel at the endless range of possible sounds a full orchestra can create.
