Orff

Carmina Burana

Completed in 1936, Carl Orff’s scenic cantata Carmina Burana, set to mediaeval dramatic texts discovered in a one-time Benedictine monastery in Bavaria, is among the most popular and accessible works in the repertoire. With its powerful rhythms, impressive choral tableaux and varied character, combined with a fascinating 20th century take on secular songs, it easily captivates listeners, even those not particularly well travelled in the world of classical music. This grandiose oratorio will be heard here with the collaboration of a mixed choir from Nyíregyháza that is a frequent winner of international choral competitions, and accompanied by the MÁV Symphony Orchestra, an ensemble with a distinguished history that has made significant professional strides in recent years. Conductor Péter Csaba is the orchestra’s artistic director and a recognised violinist who has lived in France since 1983. He was director of the Besançon Symphony Orchestra and Opera House until 2010, and has also been artistic director of the Encuentro de Música festival in Santander, Spain, since 2001. As an overture to the concert, the member of the Royal Swedish Academy and his superb orchestra will perform the rarely heard Adagio movement from Gustav Mahler’s unfinished Symphony No. 10, a piece both beautiful and confessional in tone.
