Artistic director: Iván Fischer The Palace of Arts and the Budapest Festival Orchestra are proud to announce a sparkling new series which everyone hopes will become an annual event. Every year, a weekend day will be devoted to the best works of a single composer. The first “Marathon” event will be entrusted to one of the most popular of all composers, Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and involves not fewer than fourteen different concerts. The venue for the symphonic concerts will be the Béla Bartók N...ational Concert Hall while the chamber music events will take place in the Festival Theatre. Each concert lasts 45 minutes and contains no breaks, so anyone with the enthusiasm and stamina can attend all the concerts. Tickets cost 500 hundred forints per concert, but anyone buying three tickets receives a fourth for free. This means that anyone who elects to attend all the concerts can do so for a mere 4500 Ft which is the price for a “normal” ticket to a regular concert. To take advantage of this discount, see the Budapest Festival Orchestra’s homepage (www.bft.hu), ring the orchestra’s secretariat (tel: 489-4332, 489-4330) or visit the Palace of Arts ticket office. The artistic director of the Marathon is Iván Fischer who has assembled not only the most popular works from Tchaikovsky’s oeuvre but also some unique pieces that will be performed for the first time in Hungary such as the Liturgy of Saint John Chrystosom. There is also a generous selection of the composer’s songs and piano-violin pieces which are virtually unknown in Hungary. 11.00 • Béla Bartók National Concert Hall Symphony No. 6 in B minor (“Pathétique”), op. 74 Pannon Philharmonic Orchestra – Pécs Conductor: Zsolt Hamar 12.00 • Festival Theatre Pieces for piano and violin-piano Serenade Melancolique, op. 26; Romance, op. 5; Impromptu, op. 72; Meditation, op. 72; Waltz in 5/4, op. 72; Passé Lointain, op. 72; Echo Rustique, op. 72; Melody, op. 42; Scherzo, op. 42 Irina Ivanitskaja – piano, Galina Danilova – piano 13.00 • Béla Bartók National Concert Hall Italian Capriccio, op. 45 Romeo and Juliet – fantasy overture Hungarian Symphony Orchestra Conductor: János Kovács 14.00 • Festival Theatre String Quartet in D major, op. 11 Bartók Quartet 15.00 • Béla Bartók National Concert Hall Violin Concerto in D major, op. 35 Serenade Melancolique, op. 26 Budapest Concert Orchestra MÁV Conductor: Tamás Gál Aleksander Markov – violin 16.00 • Festival Theatre Liturgy of Saint John Chrystosom – Hungarian premiere Schola Cantorum Budapestiensis, Saint Ephraim Byzantine Male Choir (artistic directors: János Mezei, Tamás Bubnó) Conductor: Tamás Bubnó 17.00 • Béla Bartók National Concert Hall Symphony No. 5 in E minor, op. 64 Óbuda Danubia Orchestra Conductor: László Kovács 18.00 • Festival Theatre Piano Trio in A minor (“In the memory of a Great Artist”), op. 50 Jenő Jandó – piano, Miklós Szenthelyi – violin, Judit Faludi – cello 19.00 • Béla Bartók National Concert Hall Serenade for Strings, op. 48 Variations on a Rococo Theme, op. 33 Budapest Strings, László Fenyő – cello 20.00 • Festival Theatre A selection of songs and duets Anatolij Fokanov – baritone, Ildikó Cserna – soprano, Emese Virág – piano 21.00 • Béla Bartók National Concert Hall Symphony No. 4 in F minor, op. 36 Budapest Festival Orchestra Conductor: Iván Fischer
