Through the works of Brahms and Johann Strauss II, this concert seeks an answer to the question arising from the colourful cultural world of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. In Brahms’s Piano Quartet in G minor, the passion and virtuosity of the verbunkos meet the formal richness of the classical tradition, while Strauss’s operetta excerpts evoke the melodic world of Hungary, the dynamism of dance and the joie de vivre of the Monarchy. The programme promises an enjoyable musical journey that shows how the Hungarian character became an important and exciting source of inspiration for 19th-century European music.
