Symphony No. 5 ‘Return to Middle Earth'

This concert is proof of the renewal of music written for brass orchestra, because the young musicians taking part in it will not be playing historic marches and popular dance music, but rather works that the composers created specifically for professional concert brass orchestras.

The premiere of Verdi's opera La forza del destino took place in Saint Petersburg on 10 November 1862, and its overture establishes the dramatic tension in the piece right from the very first note. Swiss composer Franco Cesarini’s (1961-) work Concerto Rococò evokes the world of its title with a richness of ornamentation and a light and supple flute part, while the Symphony No. 5 by Dutch conductor, trombonist and composer Johan de Meij (1953-) is based on J. R. R. Tolkien’s book The Silmarillion, the origin story of his famous trilogy The Lord of the Rings. Subtitled ‘Return to Middle Earth’, this large-scale 2019 work depicts various key characters and events from Tolkien’s world. The composer also assigns an important role to the soprano soloist and the mixed choir, who sing in Ilkorin, one of the elven languages of Middle Earth.
