Conductor: George Pehlivanian Featuring: Tibor Kerekes – trumpet Ivo Petrić: Trumpet Concerto Lucijan Marija Škerjanc: Gazelles – seven symphonic poems Mahler: Symphony No. 5 in C sharp minor The Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra appears in Budapest as part of the “In the Heart of Europe” exchange programme series, in which the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra and the orchestras of four Central European capitals – Vienna, Ljubljana, Bratislava and Prague – give concerts in Budapest. The leading Slovenian symphony orchestra was formed again in 1947 and has since established an international reputation through its tours and over forty CDs. It has been led since January 2005 by George Pehlivanian who was born in Beirut and moved in 1975 to Los Angeles with his family where he continued his orchestral apprenticeship among others under Pierre Boulez and Lorin Maazel. At the age of twenty seven, he won the 1991 Besançon Conductors’ Competition and since then has been regarded as one of the leading lights of his generation. Besides the Mahler symphony, the Slovenian orchestra will perform works by two Slovenian composers. Ivo Petrić is now seventy seven and between 1979 and 1995 was artistic director of the Slovenian Philharmonic. He composed his Trumpet Concerto in 1986. The soloist will be the splendid young Hungarian trumpeter Tibor Kerekes who now lives in Ljubljana. Lucijan Marija Škerjanc lived from 1900 to 1973 and composed his work Gazelles in 1950.
