Conductor: Alpaslan Ertüngealp Featuring: Kristóf Baráti – violin, BBC Singers Khachaturian: Violin Concerto Khachaturian: Spartacus – ballet suite World premiere of a new work by Zoltán Jeney Stravinsky: Symphony of Psalms The Savaria Symphony Orchestra (earlier known as the Szombathely Symphony Orchestra) – as a result of the Bartók Festival organised in Szombathely for decades – is one of the most dedicated interpreters of modern music in Hungary. Formed in 1962, it became a profess...ional organisation in 1974 and in 1990 won the Bartók–Pásztory Prize. Since 2006 the orchestra’s artistic director has been Turkish-Greek conductor Alpaslan Ertüngealp who has lived in Hungary for two decades. He has taken the orchestra into new territories with a series of dynamic, interesting and coherent programmes as well as inviting some distinguished guest artists. This concert in the Hungarian Symphonic Panorama series is a further example of this. The Violin concerto by popular Armenian composer Aram Khachaturian was premiered by David Oistrakh in 1940. Tonight’s soloist will be twenty eight year old Kristóf Baráti who already has enjoyed a highly successful career. In 1997 he was placed third at the Brussels Queen Elisabeth Music Competition where he also won the audience prize. He performs throughout the world. Igor Stravinsky’s masterpiece involves the collaboration of the only entirely professional full time chamber choir in Great Britain, the BBC Singers. They are renowned as among the world’s leading performers of 20th century and contemporary vocal music. Its twenty four members have worked over the past eight decades with musicians such as Britten, Elgar, Poulenc, Furtwängler, Karajan and Bruno Walter; they have also recorded all of Schoenberg’s a cappella works with Boulez and the composer of the Symphony of Psalms had them also conducted.
