Year after year, the Budapest Wagner Days, staged for the first time in 2006, add a new semi-staged opera production to their impressive repertoire. These extremely well received performances take full advantage of the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall, a building with considerably better acoustics than even the finest opera houses. Following stagings of The Ring of the Nibelung, Parsifal, and Tristan and Isolde in previous years, 2011 will see another collaboration with the Hungarian State Oper...a, this time on Lohengrin. Year after year, musical director Ádám Fischer is able to attract the top Wagnerian singers to the series, which can be described without exaggeration as the Hungarian answer to Bayreuth. In fact, many of these singers have themselves performed at the famous Wagner festival. This year, the familiar faces of Judit Németh and Béla Perencz are joined by Grammy-winning mezzo-soprano Petra Lang, who plays the role of Ortrud on a recent Semyon Bychkov recording. She has played almost every Wagnerian heroin and worked with all the great conductors from Abbado to Thielemann. Playing the role of Elsa, Ricarda Merbeth was a member of the Vienna State Opera from 1999 to 2005 and is a returning guest of the Dresden Semperoper and the Deutsche Oper in Berlin. She has appeared at the Bayreuth Festival on no less than five occasions. Finnish soprano Camilla Nylund achieved outstanding success in 2004 in the lead role of Fidelio, conducted by Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Sir Simon Rattle. Four years later, she appeared at he Salzburg Festival in the lead role in a Franz Welser-Möst production of Rusalka. Another German, Burkhard Fritz, has been a member of the Berlin State Opera since the 2004–2005 season, where he has sung the lead role in Parsifal, played Florestan, and taken the title role of Lohengrin in a production led by Daniel Barenboim.
