The Palace of Arts now organises the “Wagner in Budapest” Opera Festival for the fourth time. 2009 presents a summary of the previous years and in two and a half weeks; the musicians will again perform all the operas staged so far. Repeating the events of 2008, Der Ring des Niebelungen – probably uniquely in the world – will be performed on four consecutive days, in fact on two occasions as well as Parisfal. The resident orchestra remains the MR Symphonics and Ádám Fischer will conduct each per...formance. He made his debut conducting the Ring at the Bayreuth Festival in 2001. He conducted probably the greatest operatic cycle in music for the next three years on the Green Hill where he returned to conduct Parsifal in 2006 and 2007. In 2007 he received the highly prestigious Eichala chalice which the city of Bayreuth donates to artists who have enjoyed extended periods of success at the Festival. Hartmut Schörghofer was born in Salzburg and studied interior design in Linz before learning set design at the Mozarteum in his native city. He made his international reputation as a set designer primarily at opera houses. These days, he is primarily occupied with opera direction, and his joint role as a set designer allows him to approach operas from an unusual and fruitful angle. Johan Reuter is a member of the Royal Danish Opera where he first sang the role of Wotan which, as the Wanderer, he will also perform in Siegfried in Budapest. His repertoire is extremely rich. He has sung Figaro at the Deutsche Oper, Guglielmo (Così fan tutte) in Hamburg, Don Giovanni in Frankfurt and the title role of Wozzeck at Covent Garden. Attila Fekete first made his name singing lyrical principal roles in Budapest and Debrecen, and then enjoyed great success as Rodolphe in La Bohème, and in the title roles of Leonce and Lena, Romeo and Juliet as well as of Erkel’s László Hunyadi and Gounod’s Faust. Hartmut Welker will again perform in three operas as Alberich. He first sang the role in Dresden in 2002 and for years, has played it at Bayreuth. He has played Telramund, Klingsor and Alberich in Siegfried at La Scala Milan and has also performed in Hamburg, Berlin, Munich, Vienna, London, Chicago, Edinburgh, at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino and the New York Met. Thomas Jesatko played Fasolt in the 2007 “Wagner in Budapest” Opera Festival. As a member of the Mannheim National Theatre, he made his debut as the Wanderer in Siegfried in 2005 and then played Wotan to great acclaim. At Bayreuth, he made his debut as Biterolf in Tannhäuser in 2007. Judit Németh is a soloist at the Hungarian State Opera and has been a successful performer at the “Wagner in Budapest” Opera Festival since its inception. She has sung at La Scala Milan and since 2000, at Bayreuth. In 2007, she rescued the final performances of Parsifal, stepping in to sing Kundry, which she will also sing in Budapest, in addition to Fricka in Rheingold and Die Walküre.
