Richard Strauss
Capriccio
At the première for the 2008 season Renée Fleming dazzled the Metropolitan audience with the final scene from Capriccio. This season, she will sing the whole work, directed by John Cox. British mezzo-soprano Sarah Connolly has multiple Grammy, Gramophone and numerous other awards and is a welcome guest at all the major opera houses and concert halls. Critics have compared her velvety voice to the best chocolate liqueur and also praise her theatrical intensity. Even Hans Swarowsky had contributed to the creation of the libretto, based on a story by Stefan Zweig. The work, which hinges on the debate of Gluck’s reform of opera and takes place in a Rococo château, was eventually premièred in Munich in 1942 and was filmed twice, with Kiri Te Kanawa and then Renée Fleming in the leading role. The transmissions in Budapest have been made possible by Erste Bank, a strategic partner of the Palace of Arts. Bloomberg is the global corporate sponsor of The Met: Live in HD.
