R. Strauss: Elektra
30 April 2016, Saturday
4:55 pm - 7:06 pm
Auditorium
Produced by Müpa Budapest
The Met: Live in HD at Müpa Budapest

A new production from the Met.

Premièred in 1909, Elektra was created at the border of two worlds, in the no man's land between the great German Romantic opera tradition and the opera endeavours of the 20th century which introduced something entirely new. For this reason it is an extraordinarily exciting and electrifying work. Conducting this performance is Esa-Pekka Salonen, principal conductor of the Philharmonia Orchestra in London, Conductor Laureate of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and an expert interpreter of 20th century and contemporary music. The Finnish conductor was chosen by Patrice Chéreau, the brilliant, internationally renowned director and winner of multiple prestigious awards who passed away in 2013 , to conduct the production earlier presented in Aix-en-Provence and Milan.
Nina Stemme, who has delivered unforgettable performances in the heroic female roles of Strauss and Wagner, is one of the singers most suited to the title role. The most terrifying creation in Strauss's oeuvre, Elektra's fearsome mother Klytaemnestra, is sung by Waltraud Meier, whom critics have often compared to the classic female Wagnerian singers of the 20th century. In the roles of Elektra's tormented siblings, we can enjoy a pair of fantastic actor-singers in the shape of Adrianne Pieczonka, one of the most sought-after performers of Wagner and Strauss today, and the American Eric Owens, an expert interpreter not only of the works of these same composers, but also of roles in 20th century and contemporary operas.
