Puccini: Tosca
A MET NEW PRODUCTION
10 October 2009 Saturday
5 pm - 8:30 pm
Festival Theatre
Production Luc Bondy

The digital opera broadcasts, “The Metropolitan Opera: Live in HD” are still being exclusively broadcast in Budapest at the Palace of Arts. The series won the most august award given by the electronic media, the Peabody Prize (established in 1941) for the best radio and television broadcasts. The productions are seen in their original languages with Hungarian subtitles; in the intervals, reports are broadcast in English. With the support of Palace of Arts’ strategic partner, Erste Bank, the broadcasts are also accompanied by interviews with the star performers and other glimpses behind the scenes. Following the sweeping success of her Salome last year, the role of Tosca will be performed on the Met’s stage by Karita Mattila, described by BBC Music Magazine as “the most electrifying singing actress of our day, the kind of performer who renews an aging art form and drives the public into frenzies”. She will be partnered by Marcelo Álvarez (as Cavaradossi), the celebrated Latin-American tenor phenomenon who enjoyed a tremendous success in this role at London’s Covent Garden in 2006.
