Music and lyrics: The Tiger Lillies Stage adaptation: Julian Crouch and Phelim McDermott from Heinrich Hoffmann’s original Struwwelpeter Hungarian text: Lajos Parti Nagy Music director: Ferenc Darvas Director: Tamás Ascher For Christmas 1845, a Frankfurt doctor, Heinrich Hoffmann gave his young son a handmade picture book. Struwwelpeter is about naughty children and paints an authentic picture of the morals and child raising habits of the time: children were “bad” and parents “educated them up”. Now, one hundred and fifty years later, it is no different. The Tiger Lillies are a cult band known for their bizarre way of looking at the world and they wrote a black humorous junk opera – with the original title Shockheaded Peter – based on the book. When the children have been good That is let it be understood Good at mealtimes good at play Good all night and all of the day They shall have the pretty things Merry Christmas always brings But naughty romping girls and boys Who tear their clothes and make a noise Who spoil their pinafores and their frocks They deserve no Christmas box Such as these shall never look At his pretty picture book. Premièred in 2008, after the highly successful performance of Nyugat 2008–1908, this junk opera is a joint collaboration between the Palace of Arts and the Örkény Theatre.
