One of the greatest performers of Baroque keyboard music pays us a visit, providing a taster of the repertoire of which he is doubtless among the most expert and authentic interpreters. Dutch Baroque organ music has been a constant feature in the career of Ton Koopman. Born in the Netherlands in 1944, Koopman studied under the legendary Gustav Leonhardt and is today regarded as an expert in the historical organs of Europe. World-renowned as an organist, harpsichordist and conductor, he is the founder of the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra and an outstanding interpreter of the works of Johann Sebastian Bach: in an unprecedented undertaking between 1994 and 2004, he recorded the composer’s complete surviving cantatas.
In recent years, Koopman – who also works with major American orchestras such as the New York Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony and Cleveland Orchestra – has systematically charted the great Bach’s oeuvre. He has also found time for the music of Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, as well as Bach’s youthful role model Dieterich Buxtehude, whose complete compositions for keyboard he has recorded. In addition, he dedicates special attention to the lesser Dutch masters, as well as to the classic works of French harpsichord, exciting examples of which we will also hear at what promises to be a world-class performance.
