World-renowned tenor Vittorio Grigolo takes the title role in Offenbach‘s fantastic masterpiece. By his side is the superb Abkhazian soprano Hibla Gerzmava, who made her debut at the New York opera house in 2010 in the quadruple roles of Stella, Antonia, Olympia and Giulietta. On this occasion she sings the part of the introvert singer Stella and one of her facets, the consumptive Antonia, while Olympia is played by American soprano Erin Morley, and Giulietta by English mezzo Christine Rice. Kate Lindsey takes to the stage as Nicklausse, while legendary baritone Thomas Hampson steps into the roles of the four villains who embody evil.
Conductor Yves Abel worked between 2005 and 2011 as principal guest conductor at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. He regularly conducts at the world's great opera houses, and as a Franco-Canadian shows a particular affinity with the world of French opera. Making this experience even more special, and faithful to traditions, during intervals in broadcasts of the Live in HD series we will hear interviews with the participating artists and collaborators, affording us a look behind the scenes with Met singing stars "on their day off” acting as our hosts.
