Festival Theatre
Produced by Müpa Budapest
Director Bartlett Sher

Libretto: Jules Barbier New production (Running time: 3 hours 2 minutes / two intermissions) Olympia: Kathleen Kim Antonia/Stella: Anna Netrebko Giulietta: Ekaterina Gubanova Nicklausse/The Muse: Kate Lindsey Hoffmann: Joseph Calleja Four plotters: Alan Held Metropolitan Opera Choir and Orchestra Conductor: James Levine Director: Bartlett Sher The Metropolitan Opera revives the last work by the king of French operetta, Jacques Offenbach with a stunning cast. The Tales of Hoffmann was completed by Guiraud, and its director, Tony Award winner Bartlett Sher, inspired by Kafka, describes his production as “a magical journey in which the title character works out different manifestations of his psyche”. Besides the “great pair”, Anna Netrebko and Joseph Calleja, the Budapest audience can acquaint themselves with the talent of Korean American Kathleen Kim whom the Chicago Tribune critic praised for her “stratospheric coloraturas with a precise, penetrating soprano”. Giulietta is played by the barely thirty-year-old mezzo-soprano star Ekaterina Gubanova whom the press has praised massively for her Suzuki in Covent Garden and Eboli in St Petersburg, conducted by Gergiev. Following Rossini’s Cinderella, the “beautifully voiced mezzo-soprano”, Riga born Elīna Garanča will play the role of Nicklausse, while René Pape who was a Mozart and Wagnerian bass in the Dresden Kreuzchor, will this time play the plotters. The Metropolitan Opera reserves the right to change the cast. Running times are approximate only.
