Prokofiev

Piano Concerto No. 2

interval

Tchaikovsky

Symphony No. 6 in B minor (“Pathétique”), op. 74

The two works on this evening’s programme are not just linked as works by Russian composers but also by the tragic circumstances of their composition and the theme of suicide. Prokofiev wrote his Piano Concerto No. 2 at the age of twenty two and it created a sensation at its premiere with its wild progressive temperament. Yet in truth it is not so distant from Romanticism and the musical gestures of Tchaikovsky. The soloist will be Russian Denis Kozhukhin who placed third at the 2006 Leeds Piano Competition, a year before he graduated from Dmitri Bashkirov’s class at the Madrid College of Music. In the second half, we will hear Tchaikovsky’s last symphony, written in 1893; with its dark tone it is one of the most moving farewell letters in music history.
