Milan's La Scala is one of the world's chief centres of opera. The orchestra of the famous opera house now performs two cardinal pieces of the symphonic repertoire, conducted by Myung-whun Chung, who is well remembered by the Budapest audience for his splendid interpretation of Mahler.
The Korean conductor started his career as a pianist, finishing in second place at the 1974 Tchaikovsky Piano Competition in Moscow. He went on to study in New York, and while being an assistant to Carlo Maria Giulini, he decided to dedicate himself to conducting. It is safe to say that over the past three decades he has worked with every important symphonic orchestra in the world, from the US through Europe to Asia. He has been awarded a great many prizes and decorations. He is a committed spokesperson for ecological and humanitarian causes.
