Symphonic Dances from West Side Story
A 21st century piano concerto with a choral theme and some mambo and cha cha cha in a symphonic setting. In this programme, these two delights will feature either side of one of the greatest ever Bach concertos. Though the piece is commonly referred as Concerto for Two Violins in D minor, this evening will feature vibraphones in the place of violins. For Zoltán Rácz and Concerto Budapest's concert spanning different eras and styles, the soloist for Krzysztof Penderecki's late major work will be the outstanding Lithuanian pianist Mūza Rubackytė.
Since the turn of the millennium, the Resurrection has become the key word and epithet of not just Mahler's Symphony No.2, but also Penderecki's Piano Concerto. The latter work was first performed in Warsaw in the autumn of 2002, while its heavily reworked final form was premiered in Cincinnati in 2007. With regards to the central element of the orchestral work, the Polish master, who passed away last year, admitted that "I composed the chorale right after the tragedy in New York (11 September 2001): out of a purely human sense of upheaval, and at the same time as a gesture of protest against brutality." Bach's Double Violin Concerto in D minor and its solos were rearranged by the composer himself, though he could never have anticipated the invention of the vibraphone. In addition to Zoltán Rácz, who will also conduct the concert, the melodious percussion instrument will also be played by Concerto Budapest's percussion soloist, the phenomenally talented Boglárka Fábry. Finally, Leonard Bernstein's Symphonic Dances will evoke the story of Maria and Tony's tragic love and the murderous rivalry between the Sharks and Rockets.
