Beethoven

Missa solemnis, Op. 123

It is often said of the Missa solemnis that it is not a liturgical work but a spiritual experience reflecting Beethoven’s own spirituality, one that transcends denominational boundaries. In it, we hear a universal confession of faith expressed through the language of music. The Missa solemnis’s grandiose scale, dramatic arc, and exalted tone challenge both performers and listeners alike, yet those who open themselves up to the music will embark on a unique and profoundly moving inner journey. The prayer of the chorus and soloists, along with the orchestra’s powerful resonance, all pose the same question: is it still possible to believe in love? Beethoven’s famous response is inscribed on the first page of the score: “From the heart – may it return to hearts.”
