Pletnev Plays Schumann: this is the title of the Arkhangelsk-born artist’s 2004 solo album released on the Deutsche Grammophon label, as well as the focus of this concert, since after his appearance taking up the baton with them, Pletnev, one of Concerto Budapest’s favourite partners will this time treat the fortunate audience to his skills as a soloist in the A minor piano concerto.
The programme also leads the audience into the thick of Romanticism, as the opening number consists of the prelude to Tristan und Isolde, of which Wagner said, “[the composer] lets insatiable longing well up one time only, but in a long-drawn-out progression, from timid avowal, the gentlest attraction, through hesitant sighs, hopes and fears, laments and wishes, joys and torments, up to the mightiest compulsion, the most powerful effort to discover a breach, opening for the heart the way to the sea of endless rapturous love. In vain! Its power spent, the heart sinks back to pine of its desire...” In the second part of this concert welcoming Kristóf Baráti to the conductor’s podium, we will hear César Franck’s highly popular Symphony in D minor from 1888.
Forming an integral part of the concerts held as part of the INZERT series held by Concerto Budapest in conjunction with the Örkény Theatre during the 2023/24 season will be texts performed by members of the company that are related to the musical works in the programmes in terms of content, mood and/or evoking the spirit of the times. The 8 March performance features Gabriella Hámori.
