Mélange Baroque is a revival of a musical genre known as potpourri. Popular in the 18th century, it links together passages from works by different composers. The performing ensemble would arrange the musical material for each "movement” by inserting into the large-scale work of one composer the shorter movements of a more intimate work by another composer. The playful, light-hearted and improvisational character of the original genre is augmented in an engaging fashion by the traditional three-part form, which helps a new and unique relationship emerge between rarely played French Baroque composers. Performing the programme are soloists whose musical careers started here in Hungary, although they acquired their command of early music in places, such as Basel, Vienna and Leipzig, that are of key importance to the development of the style of the era.
