In nearly all of the concertos he wrote, Beethoven transcended the template that Vivaldi had developed previously, with his new model based on the individual sound of the solo instrument and increased importance placed on the orchestra continuing to exert its influence to this day. The only work of his in which he followed the tradition of the sinfonia concertante is his Triple Concerto for Violin, Cello and Piano. Playing the solo violin part will be Maxim Vengerov, one of the greatest violinists of our time. His partners, Fülöp Ránki and Gergely Devich, are among the finest young instrumentalists active today.
All three soloists get passages in the work to play independently and others in which they must adapt to each other as chamber musicians. Particularly lovely is the transition between the slow movement and the cheerful and fast finalé. The Seventh Symphony is also without precedent: no composer had ever before succeeded in expressing joy with such intense power. It is an enigmatic work that many have sought to explain: Wagner described it as 'the apotheosis of dance', while others believe that Beethoven's aim was to depict the world of ancient Greece. Whichever of them one accepts, it is still impossible to extricate oneself from the elemental impact of the music. This concert will also be the Müpa Budapest audience's first chance to see Vengerov take the conductor's podium.
