Bluebeard's Castle, op. 11, Sz. 48, BB 62
This concert is a true parade of stars. Charles Dutoit, now in his 80s, is one of the world's most famous conductors. Born in the Swiss city of Lausanne, Dutoit studied in Geneva and launched his illustrious career by winning a conducting competition there. After stints in Zurich and Bern, he served as the principal conductor of the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal for 25 years and as music director of the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Orchestra National de France, Tokyo's NHK Symphony Orchestra and London's Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Ildikó Komlósi has sung at Milan's La Scala and on many other renowned opera stages, with her spectacular performances preserved on numerous CD and DVD recordings. She has performed the role of Judith in Béla Bartók's Bluebeard several hundred times and is associated with the role all over the world. Zoltán Fejérvári emerged on the scene several years ago and has since amassed success after success. At this concert, he will perform one of Mozart's final and greatest piano concertos.
Bartók's sole opera delves deeply into one of the world's oldest and always relevant problems: whether it is possible for a true and enduring male-female relationship to exist when the two people are hiding secrets deep in their memories. This year marks the the centenary of the world première of Bluebeard. It will be particularly exciting to hear the work performed by two wonderful Hungarian singers and an internationally renowned conductor raised in the French tradition.
