Nicholas Milton, the Australian guest conductor for this concert, began his studies as a violinist in Sydney, before continuing at a series of notable educational institutions in the United States. Milton perfected his skills as a conductor in Helsinki under the guidance of renowned Finnish conductor Jorma Panula. Today, he frequently conducts both concerts and operas in Europe, primarily in major cities in Germany, where he was musical director of the Jena Philharmonic Orchestra until 2010. In ...the country of his birth, he holds the position of chief conductor of the Canberra Symphony Orchestra. This concert will feature a work by Graeme Koehne, one of Milton’s compatriots. Born in 1956, Koehne wrote the symphonic work Elevator Music as the third part of a larger orchestral trilogy containing a very broad mix of musical styles, alluding to the traditions of Hollywood film scores, cartoon music and popular Latin American dances. In addition to this work, the audience will hear two rightly popular European works: Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto and Dvořák’s New World Symphony. The latter contains a different set of allusions to the music of America, and remains its composer’s most cherished work. Soloist for the evening is the Bulgarian-born violinist Svetlin Roussev, who has already guested for this orchestra. This internationally renowned young musician has given concerts all over the world, and is also concertmaster for the Radio France Philharmonic Orchestra. Presented by: MÁV Symphony Orchestra
