The iconic story of Orpheus and Eurydice, one of the timelessly magical legends of ancient Greece, this time from Eurydice's point of view, by way of a contemporary - in fact, up-to-the-minute - opera. This is what the performance of this work by 31-year-old American composer Matthew Aucoin and conducted by chief music director Yannick Nézet-Séguin - ever dedicated to enriching the repertoire - promises both the local New York audience and viewers of the broadcast around the world. Taking on the title role will be the globally acclaimed coloratura soprano Erin Morley.
It is no exaggeration to say that the well-known and highly affecting ancient myth of Orpheus and Eurydice has been a part of the opera literature throughout the genre's entire history, from Jacopo Peri and Claudio Monteverdi to Gluck and Offenbach and even in our own time. The most recent piece for the musical stage to use this subject is without a doubt Aucoin's, as this opera co-commissioned by the Met and the Los Angeles Opera (and based on the award-winning drama by Sarah Ruhl) received its world première on the West Coast in February 2020. After the forced hiatus, however, this exciting new work will finally make it to the East Coast in a New York production directed by Mary Zimmerman. Along with introducing Eurydice's father, this opera retelling the story from a female point of view also brings two separate Orpheuses to the stage in the form of the young Canadian baritone Joshua Hopkins, whose career is skyrocketing, and the ancient minstrel's double, sung by the vocally and dramatically amazing Polish countertenor Jakub Józef Orliński.
