The Metropolitan Opera: Live in HD 2021/22
Müpa Budapest’s live broadcasts from the Metropolitan Opera will once again have much to delight the audience in the 2021/2022 season: We will get to know new works, bathe in the undulating melodies of romantic repertoire pieces, marvel at the voices of world-class singers, and wonder at the ideas presented by new productions. Who doesn’t dream of taking a seat at the Met and watching an opera production of the highest quality? Since 2008, opera fans in 70 countries around the world have been able to visit the Met without having to travel to New York. Müpa Budapest was early to connect to the live performances broadcast in HD quality, and its audiences have paid rapt attention to the performances, filling both the Festival Theatre and the Auditorium. There are many people who wouldn’t want to miss a single chance to watch the latest premiere.
So, what can we expect in the 2021/2022 season? One of the Met’s greatest strengths is its innovative spirit: On this occasion, we will be introduced to three new operas. Terence Blanchard’s Fire Shut Up In My Bones is an original choice on two counts as it was written by the first Afro-American composer in the history of the Met, and one who does not approach from the direction of classical music, but of jazz. Matthew Aucoin’s Eurüdiké casts new light on a familiar theme, putting two Orpheuses on stage, one of whom is the stunning counter-tenor Jakub Józef Orliński. The Australian Brett Dean’s Hamlet is another well-known topic, but it will again appear in a new interpretation, and with an incredible cast including Sarah Connolly and John Tomlinson.
Those who fall head over heels for a classic romance won’t be disappointed either: There’ll be Boris Godunov, Cendrillon (Massenet), Rigoletto, Ariadne auf Naxos, Don Carlos, Turandot, and Lammermoori Lucia. Several performances will be conducted by the Met’s new Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin. Alongside him on the list of conductors are Sebastian Weigle, Marek Janowski, Marco Armiliato, and Riccardo Frizza. Directors include the big-hitters Stephen Wadsworth, Bartlett Sher, Elijah Moshinsky and David McVicar. And the singers? In short, a parade of stars. René Pape, Piotr Beczała, Sonya Yoncheva, Elīna Garanča, Matthew Polenzani, Anna Netrebko, Yonghoon Lee and Ferruccio Furlanetto – to mention but a few from this glittering line-up. As the new season approaches, the Met broadcasts promise a marvellous array of outstanding performances once again.
