The Paris Opera, the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, the Zurich Opera House, New York's Metropolitan, the Vienna State Opera, the Baden-Baden Festival: these are the venues where Marcelo Álvarez, one of the most sought-after tenors of our day, will perform in the 2016/17 season, in operas by composers whose most beautiful arias feature on the programme this evening. The world-renowned singer of the Italian bel canto style has sung almost no other roles over his two-decade career in the more than 30 operas which feature in his repertoire. Critics highlight his perfect technique, captivating performances and expressive power, as well as the burning passion he conveys through both his voice and wonderful dramatic playing.
The Argentine tenor burst onto the international opera scene in the mid-1990s, quickly rising to the top ranks, which his presence has continued to strengthen ever since. And yet initially he also required some luck. Although he was noticed by Luciano Pavarotti, who immediately invited him to the finals of the international voice competition bearing his name, in his home country it was only after several unsuccessful auditions that he was coincidentally heard by another legendary tenor, Giuseppe Di Stefano. "You have good instincts; you remind me of myself when I was a young man,” the Golden Voice told him, before turning to the others and adding: "This young man sings with his heart, he will have a great career!” And so it proved.
