To use Wagner's expression: Jonas Kaufmann is himself a living Gesamtkunstwerk, or total artwork, combining not only everything that makes a singer excellent, but also that which makes an extraordinary artist. The most important aspect, naturally, is his voice, characteristically dark in colour and yet still bright and pure, which is just as capable of delicacy and suppleness as it is of gravity and drama. All of these are matched by exceptional acting attributes, which allow him an unusually broad repertoire. He sings Wagner and Verdi, Beethoven and Puccini, as well as Richard Strauss, Massenet, and naturally, art songs.
