J. S. Bach, The Learned Musician
A lecture by musicologist Gergely Fazekas
4 March 2023, Saturday
5 pm - 6 pm

Produced by Müpa Budapest
Early Music Festival

Listeners can find many things to be impressed by in the music of Johann Sebastian Bach: the irresistible rhythmic energy, the extraordinarily expressive harmonies and the zigzagging patterns of the independently moving parts. But beneath the surface of Bach's music we find another world that is at least as fascinating, and it is the aim of this lecture by musicologist Gergely Fazekas to guide the listener there. It attempts to show how Bach mapped the universe of music with the attitude of a true scientist, one similar to that of the great intellectuals of the time: Newton and Leibniz.

Although, like other musicians of his time, Bach held professional positions throughout his life - as a kapellmeister or as a cantor - that required him to regularly provide music for use in a wide variety of genres, there is hardly any work of his that does not pose crucial questions about how music functions. What is harmony? What is counterpoint? And what possibilities emerge from writing for four (or five, six or seven) different parts that are all to be performed concurrently? How can interrelationships be created in musical time, and how can the order of the universe be reflected in music? Gergely Fazekas will pursue these questions in connection with the exhibition of the same title on display at Müpa Budapest from 24 February until 12 March, providing insights into the compositional studio of the erudite Bach in a way that is easy to understand, with numerous musical examples provided. Admission to the programme is free of charge, but subject to prior registration on our website.
