Young musical titans, favourites from the classical music repertoire and some lesser-known nuggets await the audience at the last concert of this season’s Symphonic Discoveries series at the Palace of Arts. Following Schubert’s most popular symphony, István Várdai – who turns 30 this year, and who has gained increasing recognition and international success in recent years as one of the leading cellists of his generation – promises to win over more fans with a selection of great Romantic works of rare difficulty and beauty. Winner of the Geneva International Music Competition, Austria’s International Brahms Competition, and three-time winner of the David Popper International Music Competition, Várdai most recently triumphed at the “competition of competitions,” the 2014 ARD Music Competition in Munich.

In the same month as this concert, Dániel Somogyi-Tóth begins his fifth year as general and artistic director of Debrecen’s symphony orchestra. The orchestra has experienced a renewal under his leadership, as the young conductor has added a new dimension to the music scene in the city. One of the strengths of this more than 90-year-old orchestra is the diversity of its repertoire. It is from this varied stock that the audience will enjoy a sparking, romantic taster here in the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall.
