The Budapest International Music Competition has a tradition stretching back to 1933. The competition was revived in 1956 and has been held annually in various categories ever since. From 2003, Filharmónia Budapest Kft. – after a gap of ten years – decided to once again include the flute among its instrumental competitions. Among the outstanding professors invited to join the international jury are Akiko Mikami, Petri Alanko, Jiří Válek and Barbara Gisler-Haase. The president of the jury is Hungarian-born András Adorján, a Danish citizen who currently resides in Germany, while its Hungarian members are Henrik Prőhle and Béla Drahos. The event takes place over three rounds. The preliminaries will be held on 7–10 September, the semi-finals on 11–12 September, and the finals on 14 September, while the awards ceremony and gala concert for the winners will be held on 15 September. The competition’s opening concert, preliminaries and semi-finals will take place in the Great Hall of the Old Music Academy, while the finals and gala concert will be held in the Festival Theatre at the Palace of Arts.
