The boy who was turned into a stag, set off from a small village and went about his way. The day labourer in service of inspiration – as he described himself, someone for whom the poet’s fate is a mission. The poet Ferenc Juhász (1928–2015) was a two-time Kossuth Prize-winner, and holder of Attila József, Baumgarten and Prima Primissima awards, an Artist of the Nation, and one of the last poetic geniuses of 20th century Hungarian literature. He achieved his first successes for his ballad-like compositions, before finding his voice with long-form poems and epics. For 65 years, he wrote his unique visionary long poems that were without parallel at the time, and remain highly influential. He was nominated for a Nobel Prize in 1972, 1973 and 1975-6. He passed away ten years ago this year. We will pay tribute to his memory with our discussion and a concert theatre performance by QJÚB.
